It’s one of the most requested topics that I get for The Football Coaching Podcast. Two years ago, we broke down coaching the overhang safeties in Episode 209. Time to do it again…
Start off with understanding the critical Umbrella Principle. It’s how your players understand run fits and how they fit into your defense. Then we’ll step through the Alignment, Stance, Keys and Assignments for your Overhang Safeties and Outside Linebackers. And top it off with the drill package for refining those skills.
Running Backs spend a lot of their time working on ball handling and jump cutting. Making moves and maybe even catching a pass or two… but there’s one skill they better get good at.
Run game or passing, coaching up your running backs blocking technique is going to be critical for the success of your football team. Here’s a deep look at the technique of blocking for running backs, with a Coach Simple, Play Fast take on the position.
Don’t forget to grab the FREE PDF DOWNLOAD at the top of this page to get all the notes from this podcast plus DIAGRAMS showing each of the blocks.
There’s good teams on your schedule. They have quality seasons and then some years they drop off. The coaching staff has some turnover, the players have even more.
Then you’ve got the perennial powerhouse. No one is ever going to look past these guys, and only a few are ever going to beat them. But their head coach is the most relaxed cat you’ve ever met…
Here’s 10 Signs Your Football Team Has Made It. How many has your football team achieved, and how many are you going to reach in 2019?
Coach Simple, Play Fast, Win. That’s what Joe Daniel Football is all about. That means you can get your entire offense or defense installed quickly.
So how do you put those practice plans together? You need an Install Plan first. We put that together last month: https://joedanielfootball.com/2019install
Now you start from the end, and work back to the beginning. Follow along with this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast to create the perfect practice plans for your install.
A few years ago, I came to the realization that something had to change in the way we teach blocking run plays on our Offensive Line. We needed to take out the weak link.
Those adjustments had huge benefits. We’ve got to a shoulder blocking style - but not exactly like old Wing-T Offense or Veer Option blocking you might have seen.
This isn’t revolutionary. But a lot of coaches have asked about the adjustment to our run play blocking. So here it is!
The Wing-T Offense has always been a fascination for me, and the Buck Series is by far the most used series in that offense. But I needed to bring in an expert for us to break it down.
On this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, Coach Rick Stewart joins me to talk Wing-T Buck Series. We’ll go over the finer points of blocking the Buck Sweep, Buck Trap and the Waggle. It’s a great show!
It can be daunting when you look at all the great stuff you want to run against your Week 1 opponent, and compare it to the number of days you have to actually get that playbook installed.
Today’s episode of The Football Coaching Podcast is exactly what you need. I’ll share a plan for a 5 Day Install on Offense and Defense.
We’ve done this install schedule with a team where everyone plays both ways, and practices are only 90 minutes long. You can get it done.
Don’t forget to download the Playbook Install Template at the top of this page!
15 years ago, Georgia Military College came out with a comprehensive video series on the 3-5-3 Defense. It was all the rage back in 2005, with tons of coaches buying them up.
I was one of those coaches. We installed the defense in 2006 and I took over as Defensive Coordinator in 2007.
By 2008, we had moved on. This time it was the Miami 4-3 Defense. That changed my coaching life forever.
With a little more knowledge and wisdom, it’s time to go back and look at the original concepts and videos on the 3-5-3 Defense. What’s changed? And why didn’t we stick with it?
Find out what you need to look for when you switch to the 33 Stack Defense in 2019 (and it IS the same - GMC said so!) when you listen to this week’s episode of The Football Coaching Podcast!
Coaches love playbooks. Unfortunately, most of the defensive playbooks you’ll download off the internet are going to be completely worthless to your football program.
There’s a 10 Step Process you need to use to putting together the Defensive Playbook for your football team. Find out what it is and get to work putting your ideas on ‘paper’ with this week’s episode of The Football Coaching Podcast.
There’s nothing more valuable on your coaching staff than the guy who has 30+ years of experience coaching football. That old ball coach is a blessing.
But sometimes, it can get frustrating. Especially if he’s set in his ways and you want to move forward into the 21st Century.
This week’s episode is kind of fun, kind of weird. 10 Tips for getting that old coach to change his ways. He ain’t wrong, he’s just different.
They can be frustrating. Drive you completely insane. Maybe take a couple years off your life.
But you can’t let the officials in your football game know that, Coach. You’ve got to keep your cool.
This episode of The Football Coaching Podcast is a deep dive into how to communicate with the officials during your game. From pre-game to post-game and everything in between.

Getting that 3-4 Defensive Line to slant and attack without getting washed or kicked out can be tough. You’ve got to have a plan, and this is the technique to make that plan work.
If you’re using a spill & kill philosophy or coaching the umbrella principle to your guys, the 3-4 Defense slant drills in this episode will help your players be the right place to achieve your goals.
The Pistol Power Offense System is the most flexible offensive coaching scheme you will ever fine. It’s built on the Coach Simple, Play Fast, Win philosophy.
Those base concepts aren’t enough? No problem.
We start with 2 quick concepts and 5 drop back concepts. But that won’t limit you when we start talking tags. Today we’re looking at 4 tags for each of our Quick Game concepts.
The 3-4 Defense System that I teach in JDFB Insider offers a ton of flexibility, so you’ll want to use it. But you need to know how to use it.
In this podcast, you find out how to use your 3-4 Defense Zone Blitz Package effectively. How and when to call your Single Edge Pressures, Interior Pressures, and Double Edge Pressures.
This is an advanced stage for your 3-4 Defense System, so make sure you review the podcasts on the base fronts and base blitz package below.
You can also run all of these 5 man pressures with a Cover 1 coverage, instead of the 3 under / 3 deep Zone Blitz coverage we discuss in the podcast.

As an experienced football coach, you need to do everything you can to help develop those new coaches on staff. The young guys who think they’ve got it all figured out. Or the guy just stepping in who’s head is completely swimming.

During the course of a football game, there will be a few situations that are very hard to prepare for in your practice plan. They’re those situations where the crowd gets loud and emotions run high.
In this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, we look at practice planning for a few of the most important situations and plays you’ll face during the course of the game. It’s those moments that could win or lose the football game for your team. Or cost you the entire season.

It might be the biggest frustration I hear from coaches on a consistent basis. “My players just don’t play aggressive. They aren’t tough. How can we fix it!?”
Most coaches are not approaching this question the right way. You’ve got to address the root of the problem when your players aren’t playing aggressive enough. And it’s not just throwing your hands up and saying, “Kids these days!”
Today’s episode is all about the 4 areas you need to address to get ‘more aggressive’ play from your football team. And exactly what playing aggressive football really means.

We’ve been looking at a lot of 3-4 Defense lately. I’m hearing more and more of it. So it makes sense to go back in time and look toward the origins of the 3-4 Defense.
That means we get to break down a playbook! I found the perfect one with an aggressive defensive scheme from the 1985 Oklahoma Sooners. This 5-2 Defense has a great look at multiple fronts from the 3-4 Defense (or 5-2 Defense) and a coverage package that will fit right in for today’s game.
There’s some adjustments to be made. But it’s great to see how the defense fits perfectly with the Umbrella Principle and mirrors so much of what we do in the 3-4 Defense System.
This is the basic blitz package for the 3-4 Defense as we teach it in the 3-4 Defense System that’s a part of JDFB Insider.
First we’ll talk about the blitz package in the 3-4 Defense System and how the front, stunt, blitz and coverage all have to work together. This is going to be different depending on if you’re a 2-gap or 1-gap odd front.
Then we’ll look at those base blitzes, and why you might want to use them. And most coaches in the 3-4 Defense System want to use them on every down.
Finally we’ll talk about blitz technique considerations. Disguising blitzes with no show, show it and bluff looks. Blitzing on run downs vs pass downs, and training the eyes of your linebackers to read out of blitzes when necessary. There’s no reason to blitz a gap if they’re not running there.
Teaching tackling to your football team and seeing better results on game day will done more for your football team’s winning percentage than anything else you can do. After all, this game is still all about blocking and tackling.
There’s an entire off-season for your team to improve their tackling. And with rule changes being put in place limiting live contact, you may be teaching tackling with no pads on all season long!
In this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, I’ll share tons of drills you can use to teach tackling to your football players without any contact. And without screaming WRAP UP!

A few weeks ago I started looking at the Run and Shoot Offense. With the assistance of Jason Hahnstadt’s Demistifying the Run and Shoot Offense video series, I came up with a base understanding of the offense. But I wanted to go deeper.
Do I think the Run and Shoot Offense is the right direction for a High School Football team to go? Only if you have a background and a guaranteed Quarterback pipeline. Do I think there are elements we can take from the offense? Absolutely.
So I dug around through a few Run and Shoot Offense playbooks. Settled on the 1985 Houston Gamblers playbook with… wait what? Kevin Gilbride? No idea. That’s who’s on the front page. John Jenkins was the Offensive Coordinator after Mouse Davis had moved on to the new Denver Gold.
Yes, this is the first time we’ve ever talked about the USFL in the history of The Football Coaching Podcast. Coincidence, with the AAF coming around this year? Yes. Completely.
Anyway, here’s the links to the playbook and some other useful links for Run and Shoot Offense enthusiasts…
Every coach wants to win. And there are times when your job will depend on it. But every loss can’t be a soul crushing defeat that sends you into the doldrums for a week.
In this episode, we’re going to break down losing into 3 categories of losses. Then we’ll look at how you can best deal with each type of loss. You’ll find out how to get the most out of each loss, so that your team moves forward instead of bogging down and falling behind.
The simplest way to disguise your coverage is to give the same look on every snap. One way to accomplish that is to align your safeties and corners across the field in a straight line - then adjust before (or after) the snap.
On this episode of The Football Coaching Podcast, I’ll go in detail on installing a Roll Cover 3 system into your defense. This is based off of our 4-3 Defense System packages, but can be incorporated to any defensive package with a few adjustments.

Want to get the most out of your passing game? You’ve got to have a plan for your passing drills. There’s a lot more to it than just working the QB’s throwing motion, too.
A lot more, in fact. And a lot more than playing 7 on 7. In this episode, I’ll outline how to plan your passing game drill progression to work your most important route concepts to perfection.
